I originally started writing on Medium because I wanted to talk about robotics, Linux, Raspberry Pi, and a plethora of other nerdy topics. I wrote several articles but then when I started a new engineering job, I didn't have the energy to write after long articles any more.

But then, when Roe vs. Wade was overturned, I became so upset and angry with the ruling that I found the motivation to start writing again, but this time about different topics. I first wrote about how angry I was about the overturn of Roe vs. Wade and how it affected my new family, and than it became something more.

You see, I grew up in red conservative Texas. I listened to Rush Limbaugh every time we went to get errands, and Fox News played during dinner every night. In middle school, I remember becoming truly aware of politics as the 2008 presidential elections took place. When President Obama won the election, I remember thing that the USA was going to crumble to pieces. At that same time, I had also become closely intertwined with Christianity. I began playing drums in the christian youth group band, and by the time I was in high school I thought that I might want to become a pastor.

But when my parents divorced in the same year I decided I wanted to be a pastor, my whole view of Christianity dissolved. In that moment when I needed the church to support me at the worst point in my childhood, everyone I looked to as mentors and teachers abandoned me. No one wanted to sit and discuss how I felt about things, no one had any words for me except some vague scripture that appears when you google "divorce in the bible".

As Christianity came tumbling down in my life, so did all the right-wing politics that came with it. It was a long transition, likely ~5 years in total, until I was comfortable stating I was no longer a christian nor a conservative in public. That comfort didn't arrive until ~2015 during the next presidential race involving Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. When I saw how awful both candidates were, I thought I would give up on politics completely. But now as a young adult finding my way through modern America, I decided to start paying attention.

And so now that is why I write. I know I'm not the only one out there with a story like this. I know that lots of young adults are going through similar transitions like me, and I write these articles the way I do cause I know this is what I needed when I was younger. I'm very grateful for where I am in life now, and this is just one of my ways of giving back.
